When renting a car, expect an upgrade

Friday, August 24, 2008

If you have a car rental in your future, a free upgrade could be coming your way. Higher fuel prices are increasing the demand for small cars, so need is outpacing supply.

You should rent the cheapest car class you can find since chances are good that you will get a bigger car for the same price. (The last four times I rented a compact car, I received a free upgrade.) The agent will ask whether you'd like to upgrade for a fee, but hold out until you see what kind of car is being offered.

Beware the hard sell on rental insurance. It's a good idea to call your credit card company to find out what kind of insurance coverage you will have and also check with your auto insurance company.

Check how much gasoline is in the tank when you pick up the car. If the tank isn't full, make sure the rental company records the fuel gauge before you leave so you won't be charged when you return without a full tank.

You'll also want to take a good look at the exterior of the car before you drive off the lot. Make sure the rental company notes any dings, dents or scratches so you aren't charged for damage.

Keep gasoline receipts if you are driving fewer than 75 miles with the rental. Budget recently tried to charge me $13.99 "for my convenience" when I rented a car. Car rental companies have been charging this fee for a while, but rates have gone up. I fueled the car, presented the receipt and had the fee removed.
